I am not sure if this is a first book from this author, but she writes in a choppy manner. The main character Dena ( I learned her name quickly because Polf used it 8 times in the first paragraph.) Is undeveloped and boring. Many times the character is narrated as thinking to herself while other characters trying to interact with her. How can someone fall in love with her when nothing intelligent of Interest comes out of her mouth. In a time where few woman would be taking drafting classes she seems weak and completely unbelievable .I literally had to force myself to skim towards the end hoping that something interesting interesting might happen. It didn't.
I have read many WWII novels that are so much better than this book
Seriously, don't waste you time and money

A Matter of Trust has been delicately written in such a way to embrace the innocence of a time and place now very much removed from our hearts and minds. Dena, a young woman who is somewhat naive yet wise, leaves home eagerly anticipating her future -- career, men and adventure await the daring Coloradan. Author Sherrilyn Polf has written a book that is sure to take us back to a time when respect and honor were a source of great pride. If you like a good historical-fiction, you'll want to read...A Matter of Trust.
A Matter of Trust by Sherrilyn Polf is a lovely story you can't help but get invested in. The characters will make you want to root for them, time and time again. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
This was such a fun read. The history is true to what I've heard my grandparents speak of and the main character, Dena, is such a likable and relatable character. I couldn't help but to want to know from chapter to chapter what would happen next. The grace at which this author presents the people from 1939 is accurate to the time. The depth of research for accuracy with the mindset and aeronautic feats of the time is greatly appreciated, yet only a part of the intricacy of this delightful story. I recommend it to any one who enjoys a nice wholesome story. Well done, Sherrilyn!

It reaffirmed my beliefs that teaching of parents stay with their young long after they have grown up.
Dena Caulter must decide for herself whether to follow the teaching of her parents or walk another path. At first she is anxious to begin her new life in California far from her country home in Colorado. After a long separation, she discovers that she is even lonely for her pesky brother.
Mrs. Polf, wove this work of fiction together after accidently aquiring boxes of letters to an engineer who worked for the infamous Howard Hughes. She had one side of the story and let her imagination finish the rest. She was true to the life and times of the people involved in this important time in the United States.
I would recommend this book to those who would like to examine the difference in our time and this WWII era. It would be especially good for school children in their history or social studies classes.
This novel chronicles the adventures of a young woman as she leaves the home and her life in 1940s rural Colorado for the excitement of California. The main character Dena adapts to life in the city and learns to survive in college with he help of her aunt, uncle, and cousins.
The author is very descriptive in her wiritng and spends a fair amount of time describing in detail the clothing, music, and campus life in the pre-war 1940s. Its a bit hard to believe she is a first time author. She does a good job of portraying the young Denas uncertainties about boys, and the nervous shyness we all felt when we realized for the first time that we really liked someone in that specail way.
In my opinion this book gives a geat feel for the era in which it is set and dicusses the concerns and atitudes of college students in the lead up to Americas entrance into world war II. Also, this book is centered around a shy, and sometimes overwhelmed young woman who is just at the beginning her own lifes journey. It would be a perfect read for young women finishing high school or beginning college who are just beginning their own journeys.
I liked the story premise and the basic characters, but the novel itself flounders.
I struggled through the first two chapters - the writing is choppy, jumping between thoughts, descriptions of characters, past events, and current happenings. Many of the expressions chosen did not feel appropriate for 1939 (i.e. "carry on" for the bag that Dena is taking on the train) and other phrases were just awkward - the mother's smile that "didn't quite reach her mouth," the library that "carried only a few national newspapers and no other informing literature," or the train that "leaves promptly in about two hours." Adding to this were the random paragraph and section breaks, often mid-sentence.
After the first two chapters, I began skimming but I just could NOT get into the story. My advice to the author find a good editor and try again.
