Praise for the Music of Melancholy
"This story shocked me to the core. The ending is so unexpected it left me reeling." - Kate O'Hearn, bestselling author of the Pegasus series.
The unnatural and the macabre waltz to an eerie music of their own...
It is July 1780. Twenty-year-old William Beckford, the spoilt heir to the world's largest sugar fortune has fled England in disgrace after yet another society scandal. Beckford is journeying through the Austrian Tyrol on his way to Italy and freedom under the watchful eye of his joyless tutor, the Reverend John Lettice. An accident on a lonely Alpine height forces the two hapless travellers to seek refuge in the ancient castle of the sinister Baron von Schoenberg.
The baron is delighted to learn Beckford is an accomplished musician. Music is the only thing that keeps this strange, brooding aristocrat from falling into a black despair bordering on madness. Among the baron's other guests is the eleven-year-old boy, Alassandro, a musical prodigy discovered by the baron himself in the streets of Padua. Beckford is enchanted. The boy has the purest soprano he has ever heard.
But it is a haunting, tragic voice that will come to fill young Beckford with horror and change is life forever...

What an amazing ride!I don't often read short stories, but in this case, it had been recommended to me and after hearing a bit about it, I had to give it a try.
I am so glad I did!
This is the kind of deliciously chilling, `Gothic' tale that leaves you breathless and craving more. With clever writing that effortlessly builds and builds until we find ourselves both loving and loathing the characters in equal measure. Desperately needing to know how it all ends, but never wanting that climax to actually come.
Although set in the past, it resonates across time and would be equally comfortable if set in today's world as it touches on subjects taken from the headlines. Is it innocent? No. The Music of Melancholy is a wonderfully guilty pleasure that drives you to turn pages until the final dramatic line that leaves you crying - "No!"
I will definitely be looking out for more by this very talented author.
